Splash
Identity, Print
Splash is Arts Umbrella’s annual art auction. I led the event’s identity and designed the 2022 catalogue, introducing generative cover art to mark its 40th anniversary. I’ve continued the approach each year since, developing a new generative system that produces a unique cover for every copy.
Role: Creative Director, Designer, Developer

Arts Umbrella is a non-profit centre for youth arts education in Vancouver, Canada. Splash is Arts Umbrella’s annual art auction, a marquee fundraising event for the centre where works donated by 100 established artists from across Canada and beyond are auctioned off in both live and silent formats.
I led the creation of an identity for the Splash auctions and designed the 2022 catalogue. The challenge was to define a set of constant elements that could be used for every Splash event, along with a variable element that would set each one apart. To solve this, I conceived a set of guidelines for how unique cover artwork could be created for the auction catalogues each year, then followed them to create the first set of covers.
The cover art for the Splash 2022 catalogue is generated by a simple program. Celebrating Splash’s 40th anniversary, it outputs 40 rectangles, each with a different colour, size, and position on the page. Running it over 600 times produced unique cover images for the “Unique” and “Artist” editions of the catalogue.
